Wood Burning Stoves for heat
Posted by Amy on Jul-30-2009
How many of you used wood burning “pot belly” stoves for heat in your home? In planning for our new farm, we are considering this form of heat, but are quite nervous, since we have two young children.
Any other comments on alternative heating methods is welcome, too
I’ve also considered using a wood burning stove on which to cook, but just don’t think I could manage that. So, I’ll continue with a modern day range, just careful to conserve as much gas/electricity as I can doing so.
Here’s a beauty I’d love to own.
So…what do you think?

We use a little wood burning stove to heat our house in the winter. It’s a little work, but our winter electric bill is 1/3 of what it was before we started using the stove! But we don’t have small children…… I think you can buy decorative gates of some sort to block the stove off, but I’m not sure. I cook stews and soups on my wood burner in the winter. I know some cook full meals on theirs - but it sure gets warm standing over that puppy
would LOVE to have a woodburning cook stove! But those babies are quite expensive! And impractical in the summer. But SO pretty!
We have a wood burning cookstove as our only form of heat. Many of our friends have many small children and wood stoves. They are trained to stay away from them. You can also get metal fencing (sort of like stair or deck railings) that can be put around the stove. Our stove was my only thing to cook on for awhile. You get used to it, and you get used to not eating lots of hot stuff in the summer.
